Football culture in the Netherlands

Jalkapallo on erittäin suuressa osassa Hollannin kulttuurissa. Oikeastaan kaikki on edes jotenkuten perillä mikä Eredivisie-sarjassa on tilanne. En tiedä tuleeko teille yllätyksenä, mutta minulle ainakin tuli, miten tosissaan jalkapallo täällä otetaan. Pelit päättyy usein tappeluihin ja stadioneilla pyörii poliiseja joka nurkassa. Edellisiä jalkapallokulttuuriin liittyviä postauksia voit lukea täällä ja täällä. / Football is in a huge role in the Dutch culture. I think almost everyone in this country is aware of how the situation in Eredivisie (the highest league in Holland) is at the moment. I don't know if it surprises you but it sure did surprise me how seriously people take football here. Usually there are some fights etc during game days and the stadiums are full of security men and police. My previous posts about the football culture you can read here (sorry only in Finnish! let's see if I have tie to translate it) and here.

Pari viikkoa sitten oltiin kattomassa Feyenoord - Twente ottelua Rotterdamissa. Kyseessä oli tärkeä peli, koska joukkueet olivat peräkkäin sarjassa ja Twente olisi voitolla mennyt Feyenoordin ohi. Oli siis oletettavissa, että tunteet käy kuumana. / A few weeks go we went to see a game, Feyenoord - Twente. It was an important game because Twente was right behind Feyenord in the league. So we were expecting for the atmosphere to get... tense.

Kun jonotettiin stadionille sisään, saapui Twenten kannattajat busseilla. Busseista kuulu ihan jäätävä melu, jengi hakkasi ikkunoita, huusi täyttä kurkkua, heilutteli nyrkkejä jne.. Bussit ajettiin stadionille sisään suoraan vierasjoukkueen kannattajille tarkoitetulle alueelle. Rautaportit sulkeutuivat, ja vasta sen jälkeen kannattajat päästettiin bussista ulos ja Feyenoord kannattajia päästettiin taas stadionille sisään. / When we were in the queue to get in the stadium, the Twente supportes arrived with their buses. The noice was unbelievable: banging on the windows of the bus, yelling and some showing the middle finger etc.. you know. The buses drove inside the stadium in a special area that is surrounded with fences. Big gates were closed and then the Twente supporters were allowed to go out of the buses and Feyenoord supporters were let inside the stadium again.

Meillä oli istumapaikat Twenten kannattajien viereisessä katsomossa. Nämä katsomot on erotettu toisistaan metrien korkeuteen ulottuvalla pleksiseinällä ja ylhäällä on vielä semmonen verkko, joka estää tuon seinän ylittämisen kiipeämällä. Koko ottelun ajan Twenten kannattajat hakkasi sitä pleksiä minkä kerkesivät, huutelivat, heittelivät kaikkea roinaa Feyenoord-katsomoihin jne.. Jossain vaiheessa tunteet kävi niin kuumana että Twenteläiset alkoivat tappelemaan vartijoiden, poliisien ja vähän toistensakin kanssa. Järkevää ;-) Loppu matsin katsomoiden välissä, pleksin kummallakin puolella seisois koko katsomon matkalta poliiseja. / Our seats were next to the area were Twente supporters were seated, which is surrounded by a high plexiglass wall and a kind of a net is above the supporters which makes it impossible to climb to the other side. The whole game the Twente supporters were banging on the wall, yealling and throwing all kinds of things over the wall. At some point it got so intense that they started fighting with the security & policemen. Clever! The end of the game policemen were standing on both sides of the wall all the way from the front to the back.

Tällä keraa peli päättyi meidän kannalta hyvin, 3-1 voittoon. Kun Feyenoord kannattajat poistuivat stadionilta, Twenten kannattajat jäivät vielä omaan katsomoonsa odottelemaan. Vierasjoukkueen kannatajat joutuvat aina odottelemaan 30-60min omassa katsomossaan ennen kuin saavat poistua, turvallisuussyistä. Ja tuon odottelunkin jälkeen he saavat vain kävellä omiin busseihinsa, jotka ovat edelleen siellä heidän omalla suljetulla alueellaan, ja bussit ajetaan suoraan pois. / This time the game ended well from our point of view, 3-1 win. When Feyenoord supporters left the stadium, Twente supporters had to stay for a while still. The supporters of the guest team always have to wait from 30 to 60 minutes to leave the stadium, for security reasons. And after that they are still guided straight back to the buses and home. 

Tämä toisen joukkueen kannattajien vihaaminen ei vaan mene mun jakeluun. Vielä vaikeampi oli ymmärtää koko asiaa seuraavan viikon tapahtumien jälkeen: Ajax kannattajien "klubitalo" (jonka ohi pyöräilen joka päivä) tuhopoltettiin yöllä, ja ensimmäisenä epäillään tietenkin Feyenoordin kannattajia. Ilmeisesti vielä ei olla saatu tekijöitä kiinni, mutta varma juttuhan se on että asialla ovat olleet jonkin toisen joukkueen kannattajat. Kysyn vaan, että miten ihmeessä tämä auttaa toista joukkuetta pärjäämään paremmin / vaikuttaa Ajaxin peliin mitenkään? / I really don't get the hating the other team's fans - culture here. And it got even harder for me to understand after what happened next: the club house of the supporters of Ajax (which I pass everyday on my way to work) was burned down last week. And they think Feyenoord supporters did it. Of course this is not confirmed yet, but most likely the people behind this are supporters of one of the football clubs here. I'm just wondering that how does this make the other teams' players perform better or affect the Ajax players in any way?

Koko jalkapallokulttuuri täällä on asia, jota ei oikein voi käsittää ellei sitä koe. Eikä välttämättä silloinkaan. Mutta jälleen kerran suositttelen ostamaan liput peliin jos Hollannissa matkustelee, kyseessä on todellakin elämys jota ei Suomessa (tai monessa muussakaan maassa) voi kokea! / The whole football culture here is something I can't really describe, you have to experience it. And still you might not understand it. But if you are traveling in Holland, I suggest you to go to a game. It sure is an experience you wont get anywhere else!

Concerts in Amsterdam

Amsterdamiin matkustaville suosittelen ehdottomasti katsastamaan kaupungin konserttitarjonnan silloin kun matkaa suunnittelee. Täällä on monta hyvää konserttipaikkaa ja joka illalle löytyy musiikkitapahtumia ympäri kaupunkia. / If you are panning a holiday in Amsterdam, I recommend to check all the up-coming concerts in town. Here we have many great concert venues and every night there is a band or two playing somewhere in the city.

Isoimmat tähdet esiintyvät yleensä joko Heineken Music Hallissa tai Ziggo Domessa. Esimerkiksi tänä vuonna HMH:iin on tulossa esiintymään Kensington, Sam Smith, Steel Panther, Olly Murs, Roxette ja monia muita. Ziggo Domessa taas nähdään esimerkiksi Queen + Adam Lambert, Jason Mraz, Usher, Katy Perry, Ariana Grande, Maroon 5, Kiss, U2... Lisäksi näissä kummassakin järjestetään hollantilaiseen tyypilliseen tapaan paljon erilaisia dance-tapahtumia. / The biggest stars are usually performing either in the Heineken Music Hall or Ziggo Dome. For example this year in HMH you can see Kensington, Sam Smith, Steel Panther, Olly Murs, Roxette and many more. At Ziggo Dome you can see Queen + Adam Lambert, Jason Mraz, Usher, Katy Perry, Ariana Grande, Maroon 5, Kiss, U2... On top of these, in both venues a lot of dance events are arranged through out the year. 

Myös Paradiso on suosittu keikkapaikka, ja siellä keikkoja onkin oikeasti joka päivä ja usein monta samana päivänä. Artistit ovat vähän pienempiä nimiä, mutta jos esimerkiksi sattuu kuuntelemaan jotain bändiä joka on vasta breikkaamassa, kannattaa taristaa ovatko he tulossa Paradisoon 

keikalle ;-) Paradiso on myös siitä kiva, että usein sinne saa lippuja vielä oveltakin. Jos viikonloppureissulla esimerkiksi yhtenä iltana sataa kaatamalla (Amsterdamissa tämä on enemmän kuin todennäköistä), on Paradiso varteenotettava vaihtoehto. / Paradiso is a popular venue too and they have a concert every night, most of the times even more than just one act. The bands that play there are not that big (yet), but if you have a favourite band that is just about to break through there is a chance they are playing at Paradiso. :-) Paradiso is also a nice place because most of the times you can still buy tickets from the door. If your weekend trip is ruined by rain, head to Paradiso and your trip is not ruined anymore!

Nyt täällä Amsterdamissa asuessa on itsekin tullut käytyä muutamassa konsertissa. Ziggo Domessa käytiin katsomassa Armin van Buurenin 7h show (kyllä!) ja HMH:ssa Ben Howardin tunnin indie-pläjäys. Tänä lauantaina olisi vielä The Kooks edessä, mitä odotankin ihan super innolla. Varsinkin teininä tuli kuunneltua Kookseja (terkut Fanni-serkulle <3) joten aikamoinen nostalgiailta edessä ;-) / Now that I am living in Amsterdam we've also been to some concerts. At Ziggo Dome we went to see Armin van Buuren's 7 hours show (yes!) and at the HMH we enjoyed the concert of Ben Howard. This Saturday we are going to HMH again to see the Kooks which I am really looking forward to! I used to listen to them a lot as a teenager (greetings to my cousin Fanni <3) so I think it will be pretty nostalgic.. ;-)

Amsterdam Light Festival

Viime viikolla käytiin R:n ja harjotteluohjaaja/pomo/kollega Tessan kanssa Amsterdam Light Festivaleilla. Tapahtuma on alkanut jo 27.11.2014 ja päättyy 18.1.2015, eli jos joku liikkuu täälläpäin viikon sisällä niin kannattaa vilkasta festivaalin tarjontaa! / Last week me, R and my internship supervisor/boss/collega Tessa visited the Amsterdam Light Festival. The event has started already on 28th November '14 and will continue until 18th January '15, so if someone happens to be in town next week, you should check the schedule!

Amsterdam Light Festival on siis nimensä mukaisesti valofestivaali, samantyyppinen kuin Lux-Helsinki. Ympäri kaupunkia on erilaisia valotaideteoksia, joita voi vapaasti käydä ihastelemassa. Valittavana on kaksi eri reittiä: kävellen tai veneellä. Me valittiin tuo kävelyvaihtoehto koska viralliset veneajelut oli jo loppuunvarattu ja noh, meillä ei myöskään ole omaa venettä :-D Kierrettiin vajaan parin tunnin aikana tuo kävelyreitti, joka oli oikein mukava kierros. Plussaa siitä, että taideteokset on pystytetty tosi kivalle alueelle Amsterdamissa, ei ihan ydinkeskustassa kaiken hässäkän keskellä. Miinusta festarit saa "aukioloajoista", eli nuo valot on päällä ainoastaan 17-22 (veneajelun taideteokset 17-23) ja esimerkiksi meiltä jäi pari viimeistä teosta näkemättä, koska valot oikeasti sammuivat tasan klo 22. Amsterdam on kuitenkin is turistikaupunki jossa liikkuu paljon porukkaa myöhään yöhön asti, joten voisihan ne valotkin olla vähän pitempään päällä..  / Amsterdam Light Festival is an light installation event. There are all kinds of installations through the city that people can go see for free. You can choose between a walking tour or a canal boat tour. We chose the walking tour because the boat tour was already fully booked and, well, we don't have our own boat ;-) It took us a bit less than 2 hours to see the installations and it was really nicely made! The tour is in a very nice area in Amsterdam, not in the busiest city center but a bit further away. The only minus point was that the lights are on only between 17 and 22 (boat tour 17-23) and for example we missed a few installations from the end because the lights really go out 22 sharp. Amsterdam is a big tourist city and a lot of people are in the town late in the night, so the lights could be on for a couple of extra hours I think..

Näiden kierrosten lisäksi esimerkiksi museot, pubit ja konserttisalit järjestää erilaisia tapahtumia ja workd shopeja festivaalin ajan. Joissain ravintoloissa on myös joitain tarjouksia festivaaliväelle. Kokonaisuudessaan siis oikein kiva tapahtuma vuoden pimeimpään aikaan! Me päätettiin meidän kierros muutamalla oluella, ensin irkkupubissa ja sitten vielä mun lempparipaikassa Brouwerij de Praelissa. / The two tours are the main event of the festival but also some museums, pubs and concert halls arrange all kinds of work shops and events. Some restaurants have some special offers for the festival people, too. In my opinion the festival is a really nice event during the darkest time of the year! Cheers you up a bit :-) We ended our tour with a few beers, first in an Irish pub and then in y favourite place, Brouwerij de Prael.

Christmas in Finland

Joulu 2014 vietettiin R:n kanssa taas Suomessa, mikä oli niiiin mahtava homma! Amsterdamissa viikot menee jo todella rutiinin omaisesti koti - toimisto - ruokakauppa - koti akselilla. Pari viikkoa olinkin vähän masiksissa ja varmaan jotain myöhäistä kulttuurishokkiakin oli meneillään, joten miniloma Suomessa ei ois voinut tulla parempaan paikkaan. / Me and R spent Christmas 2014 in Finland, just like the year before. It was soooo great to be back! In Amsterdam the past weeks had been pretty boring, basically running between home - office - grocery store - home and I was a bit down.. I think I maybe even had a little late cultural chock or something. Anyway, the mini holiday in Finland couldn't come at a better time.

Suomessa otettiin ihan vaan rennosti, nähtiin vähän kavereita, nautittiin kirpakasta ulkoilmasta, syötiin hyviä ruokia ja pelailtiin pelejä. Oli niin ihanaa vaan olla, herätä ilman herätyskelloa, ei aikatauluja tai suunnitelmia.. Me likey! Ennen olin kunnon talvivihaaja, mutta pakko sanoa että on aika siisti juttu että Suomessa on kunnon talvi. Amsterdamissa on ollut koko ajan tähän mennessä aika samat kelit: asteita 5-15 ja ajottaisia sateita :-D / During our vacation we just relaxed, met some friends, enjoyed the cold winter days, ate delicious food and played board games. It was so great to just chill, wake up without an alarm, having no plans.. Me likey! Also, I used to be a real winter hater but I have to say that it is pretty awesome that we have such beautiful winters in Finland. Now that I've been in Amsterdam for 3 months, the weather has been all the time almost the same: 5 - 15 celcius warm and a bit of rain :-D
